The mountains of Sri Lanka are embellished with a slew of picturesque waterfalls. Many of these splendid waterfalls lie unknown in the forests and remote tea plantation tracks. The numerous rivers of the island, fed adequately by two yearly monsoons, the topography of high and steeply scarped pen plains, and river beds of hard metamorphic rock, all set an ideal ground for the formation of waterfalls. The serene ambience of a waterfall with the sound of water rushing down along the rocky mountains will send many a visitor into ecstatic moments of reverie.
The mountains of Sri Lanka abound with waterfalls of exquisite beauty. Numbering more than hundred and many of them are virtually unknown, hidden away in forest or approached by steps and remote tea plantation tracks. In fact for it’s size Sri Lanka has recorded water falls than another country.
Sri Lanka’s numerous revers, fed by two half – yearly monsoons, with topography of high and steeply scarped peneplains, and rever beds of hard erosion-resistant metamorphic rock, all provide ideal ingredient for the formation of waterfalls.
Sri Lanka is blessed with innumerable waterfalls. In fact the island nation has highest waterfall density (number of waterfalls per unit area) in the world. There are some 103 rivers and streams in Sri Lanka. Radiating from the hills, fed by two half-yearly monsoons, these rivers rush down the rocky precipices and form spectacular waterfalls. Only some of these picturesque waterfalls can be viewed with ease, while others are located inside thick forests and around tea plantations.
